Homeownership has become increasingly out of reach in today’s housing market. A mix of rising property prices, larger deposits and the end of schemes like Help to Buy has left many aspiring homeowners feeling like owning their own home might never be possible.  

Despite the current challenges, Shared Ownership is providing an alternative to traditional homebuying. According to GOV.uk, in the previous finan cial year , there was a 5% increase in Shared Ownership sales, with this figure rising to 18,324, suggesting its popularity continues to rise.  

What is Shared Ownership?  

Shared Ownership (this link will take you to another page) makes buying a home easier and more affordable. Shared ownership allows you to purchase a share of your home, usually between 25% and 75%. That percentage is yours to own!  

The rest of the home is owned by your housing provider, where you’ll pay a small amount of rent per month. When you’re ready, you can purchase more shares, right up to 100%. This is called staircasing.  

You don't have to staircase right away, or at all, your share can be sold at any time if you plan to move on.  

A shift in the norm – Shared Ownership isn’t just for first time buyers  

According to a recent article from The Times, S hared Ownership is no longer seen as just a stepping stone for younger people to get onto the property ladder, but rather a much-favoured option for a wider range of buyers, including singles, mid-life professionals, growing families and even downsizers. The fastest-growing group of Shared Ownership buyers were aged 50 and over.  

Based on figures from the same article, in 2009, half of all buyers were under 30, which has fell to just under a third as of 2024, and over-40's now rising from 20% to 34%, with over-50's accounting 17% of that figure.  

This change in the attitude towards Shared Ownership across all age groups, shows how it is becoming a more common process of buying property and challenging the more traditional homebuying methods.
